Scientist/Senior Scientist - Assay Development

This is an excellent opportunity to join a thriving Cambridge Based SME as a talented Scientist or Senior Scientist to join its rapidly growing scientific team.

The appointee will assist in running a busy experimental laboratory and will contribute, amongst other duties, to advance the internal research programmes around innovative assay development for toxic oligomer measurements in protein misfolding diseases.  They will conduct drug discovery research projects together with other members of the team, and will utilise both the company’s proprietary antibody platform and commercial antibodies.  They will be contributing to the development and application of new methodologies and establishing assays for demonstrating target engagement. The candidate will have a desire to play a role in discovering new treatments for debilitating diseases, whilst working in an innovative and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Use and contribute to the development of antibody-based assays for the direct measurement of protein oligomeric toxic species that are generated during protein aggregation in protein misfolding diseases

  • Design and carry out experiments and develop other biochemical and biophysical assays to quantify protein oligomers

  • Develop ELISA and SIMOA-based assays for assessing protein oligomer levels in a range of samples from in vitro, to cells and ex vivo 

  • Contribute to the automation of such assays 

  • Take an active role in the experimental design of new methods to support the activities of other teams as and when required

  • Have excellent communication and team-working abilities to conceive and drive forward innovative projects

  • Present data at cross-functional meetings and external conferences

  • Write and contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other media, including making presentations at conferences or exhibiting work at academic or industry conferences 

  • Communicate concisely complex ideas and concepts to non-experts as well as to peers

  • Mentor and coach colleagues with less experience.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience required

  • A PhD at a leading academic institution or extensive experience working in protein chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline

  • Extensive experience in ELISA and other antibody-based binding/diagnostic assays

  • Previous knowledge in studying protein aggregation and misfolding is highly valuable

  • Experience in the recombinant expression (in microbial or mammalian systems) and purification of proteins using a variety of chromatography techniques (e.g. Akta purification systems, HPLC) and their further characterisation using biochemical and biophysical techniques is a plus

  • The ability to work independently and lead, organise and participate in collaborative research projects

  • Excellent communication and team-work skills is essential for working in highly multidisciplinary environments

  • Ability to handle effectively multiple projects and responsibilities

  • Experience in assisting to run a busy biophysical, biochemical or molecular biology laboratory (i.e. purchasing, maintenance of equipment stock, etc…)

  • Industrial/pharmaceutical work experience is desirable.
